Epiphanytide is a season that moves us from Christmas towards Lent. The three wise things of Epiphany are
- The visit of the magi to Jesus.
- The baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan.
- The sign of water that becomes wine in Cana of Galilee.
These three things show forth the mystery of Christmas as light to all nations. As such, the liturgical colour remains white.
The celebration of Epiphany properly belongs to 6 January. However, it is sometimes kept on the Sunday before (particularly if that is Christmas 2). The Sunday after Epiphany is usually kept as the feast of the Baptism of Christ.
The end of Epiphanytide is considered differently by different churches. In the past, the season was often considered to be an octave, ending on its eighth day. Some consider the entire period from Epiphany until Ash Wednesday as Epiphanytide. However, it is more usual nowadays to mark the end of the season on its fortieth day, the Presentation of Christ in the Temple on 2 February.
